Dr. R.G. Lee was the longtime pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church of Memphis TN, once the home of our late friend and Focus Board member, Dr. Adrian Rogers.
Dr. Lee is perhaps best known for his sermon, Payday Someday, which he preached over 1,000 times. The following excerpt comes from a message titled, God’s Cure for the World’s Worst Disease.
Some messages are timeless:
The time is NOW.
‘Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your heart” (Heb.

I’d like to invite you to listen to our radio broadcast today that features a conversation with former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee about the election. The program can be accessed here.
In the midst of our visit, I asked Governor Huckabee to address the argument that many twenty and thirty-something Christians make when supporting a candidate that supports abortion and same-sex marriage. They often tell me that yes, those issues (life and marriage) are important, but there’s so many other things we should be thinking about like the environment, poverty and social justice.

The election is over, and I sense there’s something of a gloomy spirit in many conservative corners of the country this morning.
Analysts and pundits, and even the candidates themselves, billed this year’s contest as a crossroads of great consequence.
They were right.
As many Christians who see the confluence of our faith and the many issues of culture, we poured our hearts and souls into this year’s election. We donated our time and gave of our treasure.

Well, this is it. It’s Election Day in America. If you haven’t yet voted, what’s keeping you?
As we await the returns later this evening, it seems fitting to share an old story of presidential kindness. It was first told by former presidential speechwriter and Wall Street Journal columnist, Peggy Noonan. It’s not an urban myth but a true account from another time.
Here is the story, as told by Ms. Noonan:
The Story of Frances Green
Frances Green was an 83-year-old woman who lived in California.

Millions of Americans have already voted this year, but tens of millions more will cast their votes tomorrow. Will you be among them? I hope so.
Are you getting anxious as the polls swing back and forth and the pundits prognosticate?
The curtain is falling on arguably the most contentious and expensive election in American history. We’ve all been living through history – and phone calls, advertisements – and more advertisements.
Is there anything else that we can do?

On Tuesday we must vote through the filter of the morals and values by which we live.
We all know the issues in this year’s election:
The economy. Jobs. The ongoing and multifaceted threat of terrorism. Abortion policy. Health care and what role the government ought to play in it. Whether same-sex marriage should be legalized nationwide. Immigration.
There is no shortage of deeply held, passionately articulated opinions on these matters. You talk about them with your friends and family.

“The United States was not and is not a democracy — which is essentially mob rule,” the late radio legend Paul Harvey once said, but rather was founded “upon the guidance and blessing of Almighty God.”
He was right.
I miss Mr. Harvey’s radio program. The Tulsa-born boy with the golden-pipes had a wonderful way with words, didn’t he? And in many ways, he was also a man before his time. Take for example this radio commentary which first aired in 1965:
Thoughts?

Both theologians and management consultants like to point out that it wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark.
They’re right, of course. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said of the Darren Aronofsky-directed film, Noah, scheduled to release in 2014.
The forthcoming movie starring Russell Crowe and Emma Watson was forced to suspend production in both Brooklyn and on Long Island earlier this week due to the arrival of Hurricane Sandy.
Unlike in the real Noah’s day, though, the Hollywood-produced ark was heavily damaged in the storm.

“Character counts in the presidency more than any other single quality. It is much more important than how much the President knows of foreign policy or economics, or even politics. When the chips are down – and the chips are almost always down in the presidency — how do you decide?
Which way do you go?
What kind of courage is called upon?”
– David McCullough, Character Above All, pp. 41-42.

The sun is shining here in Colorado Springs this afternoon, but as you all know, Hurricane Sandy is bearing down on the East Coast. Forecasters are suggesting the developing storm is of epic proportions and will paralyze life for days to come for those in the impacted areas.
Natural disasters are among the most peculiar of all human challenges, aren’t they?
Simply put, we’re defenseless against the cyclical and sometimes catastrophic reality of our environment. In a day and age when man seems to have conquered so many of life’s difficulties, it’s still impossible to tame the earth’s weather, be it the wind, the waves or the rain.
