Ladies, if you’re about to be married, let me offer you a word of caution: when you marry your prince, you also inherit the king, the queen, and the whole court! (And you often get a court jester thrown in as well!) And remember this, a good relationship with your in-laws is key for creating a marriage that thrives.
But that’s easier said than done. According to a study out of Cambridge University, 60% of women say in-law conflict has caused long-term stress. Husbands also report a high rate of stress related to in-law problems.
The question is, how do you create a healthy relationship with your in-laws? Consider these three ideas:
First, good boundaries. Healthy couples set limits both on their marriage and on the outside world. This means ruthlessly protecting the most important areas of your marriage – like money, sexual intimacy, and, yes, your relationship with your in-laws.
The second idea is to honor your spouse’s parents. Treat your mother- and father-in-law with kindness and dignity. Even if they’re a bit salty or troublesome, show them respect.
Finally – above all, protect your marriage. Communicate with your spouse and get on the same page. Agree on boundaries as a couple and enforce them. Stand together to keep in-law-related conflict out of your relationship.
If you’re about to marry your prince, honor the king and queen. And set good boundaries between their kingdom … and yours.
